Fifth Grade Program

The scope of this program is to teach core energy science concepts related to both electricity and natural gas. The electric portion of the program discusses generation, transmission and distribution of electricity which includes circuits, conductors and insulators.  The natural gas lesson explains how the fuel is the produced and transported, which includes topics such as producing wells, compressor stations and regulators. The lesson also reinforces important safety information such as identifying the signs of a pipeline leak, indoor electrical hazards as well power line safety.

1. Natural Gas Safety Booklet

This four-color, 12-page booklet measures 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Book explains the basic natural gas safety; locating buried gas lines before digging, and the dangers of construction zones. Book describes fossils and fossil fuels. The book includes a hands-on science activity and an overview of the natural gas distribution system. Level: 5th Grade Note: this item is not available in Philadelphia

2. Electrical Safety Booklet

The four-color, 12-page booklet measures 8.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall. Book explains the science behind electrical safety. Contains: electrical safety rules; basics of atoms; elements and molecules; description of electrical conductors and insulators;  simple experiment on circuits, and physical laws related to the nature of electricity. Level: 5th Grade.

Third and Fourth Grade Program

Louie the Lightning Bug® and Sniffasaurus®

The scope of this program is to educate students about the inherent hazards of electricity and natural gas.  Through fun and interactive activities, students will learn important electric and natural gas safety information, such as recognizing the smell of natural gas, identifying the signs of a pipeline leak, indoor electrical hazards as well power line safety.

3. Louie’s Electrical Safety Checklist

Louie’s Home Safety Checklist is a great take-home product to get the whole family involved in practicing electrical safety. The item is an 12 x 18 inch sheet that folds down to 6 x 9 inches.

The child uses the checklist to perform his/her own home electrical safety audit. Along the way, there are visits to the family room, kitchen, bedroom, bathrooms and outside the home to look for listed safety hazards. For each safe item on the list, the home is awarded points. At the end of the audit, the score is tallied for each room and it is determined whether the home is safe or needs actions to correct safety hazards.

Examples of hazards include:  overloaded outlets, appliances near water sources, damaged cords in use, and whether outlet covers are being used.

Level: 3rd and 4th Grades

4. Sniffy and Louie’s Natural Gas & Electrical Safety Checklist

The Louie & Sniffy Home Safety Checklist for electrical and natural gas safety is a great take-home product to get the whole family involved in safety. The item is an 12 x 18 inch sheet that folds down to 6 x 9 inches.

The child uses the checklist to perform his/her own home safety audit. Along the way, there are visits to the family room, kitchen, bedroom, bathrooms and outside the home to look for listed safety hazards. One panel is devoted to natural gas safety (see picture in “Additional Images” tab).  For each safe item on the list, the home is awarded points. At the end of the audit, the score is tallied for each room and it is determined whether the home is safe or needs actions to correct safety hazards.

5. Louie’s Electrical Safety House of Hazards

Louie’s House of Hazards is a 17 by 11 inch educational safety handout that is folded in the middle to create a four-page piece.

The center spread consists of a four-color drawing depicting 13 electrical contact hazards inside and around the home. Students try to identify all 13.

The fourth page contains an answer key, score box and a list of Louie Tips for Safety. Level: 3rd Grade

6. Sniffy Gas Safety Booklet

This 16 page, 8 1/2 x 11 inchbook teaches formation and distribution of natural gas as well as important natural gas safety rules. Book is in black and white and can be colored by child. Book also contains a variety of fun activities including connect-the-dots, fill in the blank, hidden words, a maze and more! Note: this item is not available in Philadelphia
